New Zealand is a popular destination for international students looking for quality education, globally recognised qualifications and an excellent multicultural environment. If you are planning to study in New Zealand for more than three months, you will generally need an appropriate student visa after receiving an offer of place from an approved education provider.
What Is a New Zealand Student Visa?
A New Zealand student visa allows eligible international students to study full-time at an approved educational institution. The Fee Paying Student Visa is one of the most common options for international students. Depending on the course and visa conditions, eligible students may also be permitted to work part-time while studying
New Zealand Student Visa Requirements
Applicants need to meet several requirements before applying. Having complete and accurate documentation can help avoid unnecessary delays in the application process.
Offer of Place
You must have an offer of place from an approved New Zealand education provider. The education provider must confirm that you have the academic ability and English-language capability required for your chosen course.
Proof of Tuition Fees
You generally need to demonstrate that you have paid, or can pay, the required tuition fees. Evidence may include a fee receipt or confirmation from your education provider. Scholarship or eligible education-loan documentation may also be relevant depending on your circumstances
Proof of Living Expenses
Students must show that they have sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay. For tertiary study of one year or longer, the current requirement is NZD $20,000 per year, while shorter courses generally require evidence of NZD $1,667 per month. Acceptable evidence can include bank statements, scholarships, education loans or an eligible sponsor.
Health, Character and Genuine Study Plans
Applicants must meet New Zealand's health and character requirements and demonstrate a genuine intention to study. Depending on individual circumstances, medical examinations, chest X-rays or police certificates may be required. You may also need evidence that you can leave New Zealand at the end of your stay.
New Zealand Student Visa Fees
The visa application cost depends on the visa type, nationality, location and other factors. The Fee Paying Student Visa currently starts from NZD $850 according to Immigration New Zealand. Because fees can change, applicants should check the latest official fee information before submitting an application.
New Zealand Student Visa Processing Time
For the Fee Paying Student Visa, Immigration New Zealand currently states that 80% of applications are processed within 8 weeks. Actual processing times can vary depending on the education provider, application completeness, verification requirements and application volumes
Current student visa wait-time information shows that processing can differ considerably between universities, polytechnics, private training establishments and schools. Students are strongly encouraged to apply at least three months before their intended travel or course start date.
